Research Assistant for Emission Modelling and Simulation

University of Cambridge is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening postdoctoral associate position in combustion. The deadline for applying is October 09, 2019.

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on emissions modelling for Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The simulations are to be conducted using OpenFoam with FlaRe combustion modelling. This work is funded by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and thus it involves close collaborations with MHI.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are to (i) develop models for CO & NOx formation/consumption in turbulent combustion, (ii) implement these models in OpenFoam, debug and test, (iii) conduct LES for model validation, post process the results for dissemination, (iv) prepare slides for progress review meetings & discussions and (v) actively participate in the project meetings.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are (i) a PhD, either completed or close to completion, in the area of computational combustion, (ii) knowledge on LES of turbulent combustion, (iii) demonstrated ability to work with OpenFoam and working knowledge of FlaRe combustion model, (iv) ability to modify this combustion model to include pollutant species, and (iv) a team player with clear communication skills. The skill sets and experiences must be demonstrated through publications in journals and conferences. The candidate should be able to prioritise the work as per the project requirement.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 June 2021 in the first instance.
