PhD Scholarship on Simulation for Durability/erosion of Dual-fuel Injection Systems

International students are invited for a PhD scholarship in mechanical engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. The funds for this fellowship are available for 3 years. This position is closed on October 31, 2019.

Information about the project

The advertised position is on simulating cavitating flows and cavitation erosion, here for improving the environmental performance of a dual fuel injection system for heavy duty diesel engines. Cavitation in general, i.e. the occurrence of vapour pockets in a liquid, is a phenomena present in a wider range of applications, such as in medicine for drug delivery, in surface cleaning, in hydro power turbines, pumps, on marine propellers besides in fuel injection systems. It is thus a broad research community spanning many common research questions, sharing underlying physics and simulation tools, and with an overlapping network.

The background to this project is that with increasing environmental awareness, there is an increasing effort in adapting combustion engines to new fuels, while maintaining and improving operational performancy with respect to emissions and maintenance; these efforts thus concern both impact on the climate and the air quality and human health. The research is defined in collaboration with the industry to advance on a number of topics that will advance the environmental performance of heavy duty vehicles; for more background see the project web page at

(1) To implement an approach for the prediction of cavitation-induced erosion.

(2) To investigate cavitation erosion in injectors under dual-fuel operating conditions.

(3) To assess the effect of needle wobble on cavitation and cavitation erosion.

OpenFOAM will be the primary software to be used in the project, and both incompressible and compressible RANS and LES will be used; in the later stages also the needle motion will be considered. Existing solvers are available but it is expected that they will need to be further developed within the project.

The project is performed within an European Marie Curie ITN project named EDEM, “Experimentally validated DNS and LES approaches for fuel injection, mixing and combustion of dual-fuel engines.” The project forms a PhD student network of in total 15 PhD students across the best European universities, institutes, and industries in the research area. The project is defined in collaboration with Woodward L’Orange in Stuttgart, Germany, and will include co-supervision from research engineers within the company. It is also a requirement in the funding scheme that the candidate will spend 18 months at Woodward L’Orange during the duration of the EDEM project.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies, which include work in the research project but also to take doctoral courses and participate in teaching activites. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing; working language is English. The position generally also includes teaching, primarily in the Masters programmes within the department, or performing other duties corresponding to maximum 20 per cent of working hours.

In addition, being part of a European Marie Curie training network, you will participate in activities organised within the project, including seminars and training sessions as well as a secondment of 18 months to Woodward L’Orange in Stuttgart, Germany.

The project funding also puts special requirements on the applicant as follows: Early-stage researchers (ESR) are those who are, at the time of recruitment by the host, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree (M.Sc or Diploma) which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate. ESRs are not allowed to apply for a position if they have been living in the country of the future host institution for more than 1 year in the last 3 years.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years.


To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Good knowledge in CFD is required, with some experience in programming. Experience with unsteady simulations, multiphase flows and turbulence modeling is meritous. Knowledge about internal combustion engines is beneficial but not required.
