PhD Scholarship Investigation of Deformation Mechanisms in Strong and Ductile Alloys

The Section for Materials and Surface Engineering at DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering performs research in the field of materials science and engineering involving theoretical, experimental and numerical approaches. The research is multi-disciplinary and involves aspects of physics, mechanics, chemistry, and manufacturing technology. The section works on three broad themes: materials design and surface engineering, microstructure evolution and phase transformations, materials performance and degradation.

In the DFF granted research project "Breaking the strength-ductility paradox by stacking fault engineering design", the aim is to design stainless steels and high entropy alloys with an unrivalled combination of high strength and high ductility, by tailoring the stacking fault energy and thus the operating deformation mechanisms (slip, twinning or transformation) through appropriate alloying. A PhD scholarship, starting January 2020, is dedicated to experimental tasks in the project, while a Postdoc, starting later in 2020, will be engaged in the numerical modelling tasks. The PhD will be working on the synthesis, mechanical testing and microstructure characterization of model alloys. The synthesis aims at tailoring the stacking fault energy by appropriate combinations of alloying elements, including interstitial elements. The microstructure characterization will involve in-situ synchrotron diffraction analysis and in-situ scanning and transmission electron microscopy of the alloys under deformation in order to quantitatively determine the stacking fault energy and identify the deformation mechanisms during loading. You will be working in a team of researchers with complementary expertise. Effective communication in English is therefore of utmost importance. Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. We are specifically interested in applicants with a metallurgical background, including microstructure characterization with advanced (synchrotron) X-ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy techniques. The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
