Research Fellow at University of Surrey

University of Surrey is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening postdoctoral associate position in political science. The initial contract for this position is 18 months and posible to extend. This position is open until filled.

'Local Institutions, Productivity, Sustainability and Inclusivity Trade-offs' (LIPSIT) is a project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for 18 months from 1 October 2019. It aims to identify those institutional and organisational arrangements at the regional level that tend to lead to the ‘good’ management of policy trade-offs associated with increasing productivity, and to make recommendations to policy makers based on this. The project is a component of the ESRC's increasing interest in productivity research.

We are seeking a researcher to assist with the selection of the regions to be used as case studies and contribute to a report on current understanding of the factors that affect regional differences in productivity; collect documents describing local industrial and economic strategies; analyse the strategies set out in these documents using qualitative data analysis software for common themes and narrative structures; gather data on stakeholders in each region and carry out a social network analysis of their inter-connections; participate in interviewing selected stakeholders; and drawing on all the evidence gathered by the project, design and carry out a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) of the regions to help explain the differences in the strategic trade-offs between regions.

The post will suit someone who has a PhD in sociology, political science, public policy, business, management or a related area, experience of formal qualitative analysis, the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of potential stakeholders from business, government, local government, and an interest in, and preferably some experience of, productivity research.

The project is a collaboration between the Universities of Surrey, Birmingham, Warwick, and Cardiff and DEMOS. The post will be based in Guildford but travel to the other sites will sometimes be required. The post holder will become a member of the Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity of the Nexus (CECAN), https://www.cecan.ac.uk and the Surrey Department of Sociology, https://www.surrey.ac.uk/department-sociology. Informal enquiries about the post can be made to Professor Nigel Gilbert, n.gilbert@surrey.ac.uk, from whom a copy of the research plan can be obtained. Further information can be found in the job description.
