Postdoctoral Position in Stochastic Traffic Networks

Chalmers University of Technology is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening postdoctoral associate position in computational mathematics. The initial contract for this position is three years and posible to extend. Potential candidates should apply before September 22, 2019.

Information about the division

The Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg and the Division of Systems and Control at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology invite applications for one 1+1 year postdoctoral position (full time temporary employment) starting January 1, 2020 or asap. The successful candidate will be offered a one-year employment at the Department of Mathematical Sciences followed by a one-year employment at the Department of Electrical Engineering. The project is funded jointly by CHAIR (Chalmers AI Research) and Transport Area of Advance. The project will be supervised by assoc prof Annika Lang (http://www.math.chalmers.se/~langa/), Department of Mathematical Sciences, and prof Balzs Kulcsr (https://www.chalmers.se/sv/personal/Sidor/balazs-adam-kulcsar.aspx), Department of Electrical Engineering.

Understanding efficiency and behavior aspects in partially automated (vehicular) technology in large-scale (traffic) context is an unsolved problem nowadays. Our main goal is to develop learning methods for uncertain traffic networks. We will rely on interdisciplinary approaches that combine mathematical sciences and traffic flow theory with traffic safety analysis. We propose to use deep neural networks fed by data from real measurements and/or microscopic traffic simulators (VISSIM, AIMSUN, SUMO) to learn how to change parameters and how to solve stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) based network models. Our ultimate goal is to learn network parameters and predict short time network behavior.

At the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics we conduct research at a high international level in areas such as Biomathematics, Bioinformatics, Computational mathematics, Optimization, Mathematical statistics, Kinetic theory. More information about our research groups is available on the website http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/math/research/research-groups/

We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. The department provides a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests. At the division there are many committed teachers with extensive and broad experience of all aspects of higher education. Together with the Divisions of Algebra and Geometry and Analysis and Probability we form the academic part of the department of Mathematical Sciences, which is a joint department of Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg, and one of the largest in mathematics in the Nordic countries with a faculty core of about 80. More information about us is available on the website, http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/math/.

At the Department of Electrical Engineering research and education are performed in the areas of Communication and Antenna systems, Systems and Control, Computer vision, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. Our knowledge is of use everywhere where there is advanced technology with integrated electronics. We work with challenges for a sustainable future in society of today, for example in the growing demands concerning efficient systems for communications and electrifying.
