Postdoctoral Fellowship-hydrological Modeling at University of Michigan

University of Michigan is offering postdoctoral associate position in atmospheric sciences. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for two years in USA. Applicants should apply as soon as possible.

Please do not submit applications to the project supervisors. Applications that do not contain all four items listed above will not be reviewed.

The University of Michigan, through a partnership between the School for Environmental and Sustainability (SEAS), the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering (CLaSP), seeks outstanding candidates for a postdoctoral scholar position. The successful candidate will lead research at the intersection of hydrology and atmospheric science in high performance computing environments. Specific research foci include testing numerical models across new spatial domains, calibration, validation, and uncertainty assessment, and understanding land-atmosphere interactions.

The selected scholar will work with Dr. Andrew Gronewold (SEAS and CEE), and Dr. Allison Steiner and Dr. Ricky Rood (both of CLaSP) on development, testing, and application of state-of-the-art hydrological models to select spatial domains. A specific goal of this research is to advance foundational hydrological modeling not only within SEAS and CLaSP, but across all units of the University of Michigan, through deployment of hydrological models and data within the University's high performance computing environment. It is also expected that the selected scholar will advance visualization and dissemination of hydrological modeling output through use of existing tools such as the Weather Research and Forecasting Hydological model (WRF-Hydro) HydroInspector.

The envisioned research will be based on application and testing of WRF-Hydro. Potential domains of interest include, but are not limited to, the Laurentian Great Lakes, the East African Great Lakes, or High Mountain Asia. Technical areas of research are likely to include model calibration and validation, and identification of suitable meteorological forcing data. The envisioned research will leverage partnerships with scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The successful candidate will be expected to publish in the peer-reviewed literature, present research results at scientific conferences, and assist in developing proposals for external funding. The position offers a competitive salary with funding available for travel. The position has an initial duration of one year, with the potential for a second year contingent on funding availability and performance.

Applications will be reviewed one a first-come first-served basis until the position is filled. The position is expected to start during the fall 2019 semester.

Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in data intensive research with a focus on hydrological and climate modeling, statistical analysis, and climate science. A PhD in hydrology, water resources, atmospheric sciences, or related field is expected. Candidates must have strong numerical modeling and programming skills.

Working knowledge with state-of-the-art hydrological models such as Noah-MP, WRF-Hydro, or VIC is desired. Preference will also be given to candidates with a record of peer-reviewed publications and experience preparing grant proposals. Candidates should have strong written and oral communication skills.

Job openings are posted for a minimum of seven calendar days. The review and selection process maybegin as early as the eighth day after posting.Thisopening may be removed from posting boards and filled anytime after the minimum posting period has ended.

The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
