Postdoc in Yeast Systems Biology with Emphasis on Nitrogen Metabolism

Chalmers University of Technology has an opening postdoctoral position in computational biology. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for three years in Sweden. This position is closed on October 01, 2019.

The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering was founded January 1 2015, and started off with high ambitions. The aim was to grow and become a leading center of innovation by combining the latest research in life sciences with biochemistry. And the department got off to flying start. In its first year, the numbers for publication, citation and external funding have been excellent.

The department consists of four divisions, each conducting outstanding research in the areas of industrial biotechnology, systems biology, chemical biology and food science. The overall goal is to help build a sustainable society and improve human health. Nearly 200 people from 20 countries are currently working at the department. The working environment is characterized by respect, cooperation, responsibility, creativity and job satisfaction. The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering has summarized its mission in four points: - To be an attractive environment for top-level researchers in biological engineering - To deliver top-level research results and innovative solutions for use in a sustainable society - To offer excellent education that develops creative engineers and scientists - To be a major contributor to international visibility of Chalmers Information about the division

The Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology, located in the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering at the Chalmers University of Technology, is one of the world leading research groups within the field of systems biology. The Division is composed of 7 labs and faculty, and each group leader is responsible for directing particular research themes within the realms of quantitative systems and synthetic biology. The research interests within the division range, from trying to understand fundamental metabolism, to highly applied research on the production of renewable energy, up to studying metabolic-related diseases such as cancer. The division also engages in extensive collaborative projects across universities and industry both nationally across Sweden and internationally. The division operates collaboratively with two other satellite facilities at Chalmers: the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability ( and the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab;

Major responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated, creative post-doctoral candidate interested in studying yeast systems biology in the context of nitrogen metabolism. Your major responsibilities are to independently drive the research project forward in a criticial and effective manner, to organise and manage data to a high standard, to regularly communicate results to your colleagues, and to disseminate your main conclusions to the scientific community in the form of meetings, conferences and peer-reviewed articles. You should be able to apply critical and creative thinking on a regular basis. Equally, you should be able to adopt an open minded approach to work that allows integration of constructive feedback as well as the possibility of adapting your research direction based on new results. In addition you should be inquisitive about the fundamentals of yeast nitrogen metabolism as well as other cellular processes, and if necessary, question pre-existing scientific axioms. You should keep in mind the most challenging and rewarding questions whilst also working within a realistic time frame with resources that are provided.

The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master’s levels as well as supervising master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent. As the systems biology group at Chalmers is composed of a highly collaborative international environment, a successful candidate is expected to demonstrate exceptional team work skills.

This is a full-time temporary employment position. This position is for 14 months with possibility to extend.

The ideal candidate would have a PhD degree, not older than three years, in systems biology, biochemistry, or biophysics. You should have extensive experience in both experimental and computational biology. You should have experience with chemostat cultivations of yeast, yeast nitrogen metabolism, generation and analysis of absolute-quantitative multi-omics datasets, and genome-scale metabolic modeling. Previous lab work experience with metabolism of other organisms (eg mouse, human) would be an advantage. You are also expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate a good potential for working in research and education.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the dynamic city ofGothenburg.
