PhD Studentship Opportunity in The Role of The Microbiome and Circulating Endothelial Cells in The Pathobiology of Cutaneous Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy

A new PhD position in veterinary medicine is available at University of Surrey. Applications will be evaluated immediately.

PhD studentship opportunity in the role of the microbiome and circulating endothelial cells in the pathobiology of cutaneous renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV)

Applications are invited for a prestigious three year Alabama Rot Research Fund, Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists and the University of Surrey (School of Veterinary Medicine) fully funded PhD studentship, commencing in January 2020.

The project will use state of the art phenotypic and genotypic approaches to study the pathogenesis of Alabama Rot (CRGV), a devastating disease of dogs caused by damage to blood vessels of the skin and kidney, ultimately resulting in kidney failure. The student will work with clinical colleagues to define the role of the microbiome and host factors in the pathogenesis of the disease.

This exceptional research opportunity requires a candidate with an interest in molecular pathogenesis and who has at least a good first degree (2i or above) in a relevant subject such as biology, microbiology, genetics or veterinary medicine. As the project is biased towards microbial sequencing and host cell techniques, evidence of a sound understanding of these procedures would be highly desirable. However, training in microbiology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, cellular pathology, metabolomics and metagenomic approaches will be provided.

The successful applicant will be registered with the University of Surrey and based in the School of Veterinary Medicine with some of the studies undertaken at Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Hampshire.

Applications should be sent through the Veterinary Medicine and Science PhD course page: https://www.surrey.ac.uk/postgraduate/veterinary-medicine-and-science-phd. Please clearly state the studentship title on your application. We ask that you provide two academic references in your application.

Applicants should apply to the Veterinary Medicine and Science PhD programme via the on-line application.

Any other enquires please email Professor Roberto La Ragione (r.laragione@surrey.ac.uk).
