PhD Studentship at University of Cambridge

University of Cambridge, UK has an opening PhD position in computer science. The funds for this position are available for 5 years. Candidates are welcome before October 04, 2019.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3.5 years.

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to work on high-performance computer architecture at the Department of Computer Science and Technology, in conjunction with Arm. This studentship is for both UK/EU applicants interested in working on a PhD thesis in the area of Computer Architecture.

In this era of multicore computing, single-threaded performance is often neglected, yet is important for sequential applications and during phases of low thread-level parallelism. To address this, we seek a PhD student to investigate advanced methods of increasing single-threaded performance using novel speculative and non-speculative techniques to extract instruction-level parallelism.

The successful candidate will identify opportunities to optimistically execute instructions and develop micro architectural schemes to efficiently exploit these situations. She or he will join a team of postdocs and PhD students investigating performance, reliability and security in future many-core systems. The position is within the Computer Architecture Group at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory, and will involve significant collaboration with researchers at Arm Ltd.

We seek candidates with a strong background in computer science (Bachelor 1st class honours degree or Masters degree) with an interest in computer architecture and processor microarchitecture. Experience in compilers or runtime systems would be advantageous, but not essential. Candidates are asked to highlight relevant work, if applicable. Candidates will also need to meet all prerequisites for admission to the PhD in Computer Science (please refer to: https://www.cst.cam.ac.uk/admissions/phd).

Candidates can make an informal enquiry to Dr Timothy Jones (timothy.jones@cl.cam.ac.uk) prior to submitting a formal application. Such enquiries should include a CV.

The PhD studentship will cover all approved University tuition fees at home/EU rates, and provide a tax-free maintenance allowance for 3.5 years. It also includes a budget for travel and research equipment.

Complete applications, including two academic references, research proposal, transcripts and degree certificates, should be submitted by Friday 4 October 2019 (for entry in January 2020) via the Applicant Portal, see https://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/how-do-i-apply. Queries regarding the application process should be directed to clgrdadm@hermes.cam.ac.uk using the reference number below. If you upload any additional documents, which have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.
