PhD Scholarship Position in Microwave Transistors Towards The Quantum Noise Limit

A new PhD position in nanotechnology is available at Chalmers University of Technology. The funding allows successful candidate to work for four years. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before September 30, 2019.

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment.

Information about the project

We offer a PhD student position for exploring transistors aimed for the most sensitive low-noise amplifiers known to date.

The development of transistor technology has an exciting time during the 2020's when the classical Moore's law is expected to come to an end. For the most sensitive amplifiers used in quantum computers, specialized transistor are used based on compound semiconductors. The optimization of such transistors with respect to material, device design and the amplifier is still not fully understood.

The PhD student project aims to push the frontiers in the lowest noise semiconductor electronics using transistors. You will work in close collaboration with a small innovative company, Low Noise Factory AB, in Gothenburg. The project is part of a new international collaboration with South Korean researchers.

We are fabricating devices in a state of the art process for ultra-low noise transistors. We have very well equipped measurement labs and excellent collaboration with industry. The Ph.D. student position offers possibilities to specialize in various areas, e.g. device physics, measurement and modelling, or microwave design.


A suitable background is Master of Science in Physics (F) with classes in (microwave) electronics alternatively Electrical Engineering (E) with classes in physics/microwave engineering. It is essential to have a strong inner driving force for pushing a project as well as excellent collaboration skills in a research team. This research is carried out in GigaHertz Centre (, a joint collaboration between Chalmers and the best microwave companies in the world.

The Ph.D position is nominally four years and includes three years of research projects and one year of classes. The research leads to an academic thesis to be defended at a public dissertation. In addition, teaching for undergraduates can be added to the position which accordingly will prolong the Ph.D program.
