PhD Scholarship Opportunity in Obesity Research at Monash University

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD scholarship in cell biology at Monash University. The deadline to apply is September 06, 2019.

The Cellular Signalling & Metabolic Disease Laboratory ( is seeking an enthusiastic student to conduct research on the central nervous system (CNS) control of energy expenditure in obesity.

It is now well appreciated that adipocytes are not simply fat storage cells, but can be subdivided into white, brown and 'beige' cells, with the capacity to store (white) or burn (brown & beige) fat. Together, these cells are fundamentally important in the control energy balance and whole-body adiposity. The abundance of beige adipocytes is diminished in obesity and stimulating their development holds promise for the treatment of obesity and metabolic disease. Recent studies from our laboratory have highlighted the importance of the hypothalamus in the CNS in controlling the abundance of 'beige' fat and energy expenditure.

The project will build on recent work form the laboratory published in Cell (Dodd et al., 2015), Cell Metabolism (Dodd et al., 2017) and eLife (Dodd et al., 2018) and use cutting-edge techniques including pharmacogenetic and stereotactic surgery to modulate neural circuitry and mouse genetics to determine how the 'CNS-beige adipocyte axis' may be subverted to perturb energy balance and exacerbate the development of obesity.

Allapplicants must be able to demonstrate a capacity to carry out independentresearch and have adequate training and ability to pursue the proposed courseof study. In all cases, the qualifications described below must be from MonashUniversity or an equivalent institution in the opinion of the Graduate ResearchCommittee (GRC).

Exceptional graduate students with a high level (H1) Honours degree, a Master's degree with a significant research component, or qualifications deemed equivalent by the GRC, in the field of Physiology, Neuroscience, Cell Biology or a related discipline are encouraged to apply.

In addition to the minimum entry requirement, eligibility for a stipenddepends on your circumstances. We award a range of scholarships through a competitive selection process based on your academic record, research output, and research experience. Further details on eligibility requirements can be found at:

International applicants are encouraged to also apply for a Monash International Tuition Scholarship (MITS).
