PhD Scholarship in Renewable Energy Forecasting at Technical University of Denmark

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in sustainable energy at Technical University of Denmark. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for 3 years in Denmark. Applications are invited up to August 25, 2019.

The Department of Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark seeks a highly-talented applicant for a 3-year PhD position with focus onmodern aspects of renewable energy forecasting. The PhD Student will join the Energy Analytics & Markets group, part of the Centre for Electric Power and Energy. The PhD scholarship is sponsored by DTU, though interaction is expected with a number of ongoing and future projects e.g. EU project Smart4RES.

The project seeks to develop and evaluate novel approaches to renewable energy forecasting with emphasis placed on high dimensionality (jointly considering thousands of sites), privacy-preserving distributed learning, online learning and linkage to data markets. It will build on recent research works and achievements in forecasting and markets at DTU.

The Centre for Electric Power and Energy has received increased recognition internationally for its contribution to both methodological and application-related aspects of modern power system engineering. A key area of focus is on integration of high shares of variable and partly predictable renewable power production through the design of appropriate market mechanisms allowing for efficient and reliable power system operation, while ensuring a proper redistribution of increased social welfare. The Energy Analytics & Markets group is currently involved in a number of cutting-edge projects for the design and operation of such electricity markets (e.g., the Energy Collective), for the generalization to markets for integrated energy systems (e.g., CITIES - Center for IT-Intelligent Energy Systems in Cities, SCA and EnergyLab Nordhavn), or for the proposal of new approaches to energy analytics, like learning and probabilistic forecasting in high dimensions and data markets for instance (EU project Smart4RES).

Themain task is to propose and analyse novel forecasting models, approaches to forecasting in high dimensions, as well as verification techniques to accommodate very high resolution forecasting contexts, as well as focus on extremely large portfolios of sites, in other order of thousands. Some of this work is to link to ongoing projects in renewable energy forecasting, also linking to the design and deployment of distributed computing and data markets. Candidates should hold a two-year MSc (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year MSc.The ideal candidate has experience withenergysystems, sustainable energy, optimization, statistical and machine learning, forecasting, and with an interest in programming. Preference will be given to candidates with: The ability to understand the scientific literature and implement cutting edge proposals in real-world cases Innovative skills, ability to generate new ideas and to implement them in practice The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Pierre Pinson.
