PhD Scholarship at The University of Queensland

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD scholarship in developmental biology at The University of Queensland. The initial contract for this position is three years. Potential candidates should apply before September 27, 2019.

The Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI) was created in 2009 as a strategic initiative of The University of Queensland (UQ) and reflects the growing role of spectroscopy and imaging in cutting-edge biotechnology and biomedical research at UQ. The CAI has state-of-the-art facilities including the highest field NMR spectrometer in the southern hemisphere. The facilities provide an excellent environment for the CAI's research community (structural biology, system biology, polymer chemistry, radiochemistry and advanced imaging).

The School of Biomedical Sciences is a distinguished centre for research and teaching in the academic disciplines of Anatomy, Developmental Biology, Neuroscience, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Pathology. The School has over 40 full-time research and teaching staff, and is one of the largest Schools of this type in Australia. Our diverse and state-of-the-art research provides an exciting environment for national and international research fellows and higher degree students.

Working under teams lead by Associate Professor Mehdi Mobli, Dr Lachlan Rash and Dr Eivind Undheim, we currently have two PhD Scholarships available. Both projects rely on structural information acquired using state-of-the-art biochemical and structural biology techniques.

The first project is entitled Accessing structurally elusive states of sodiumchannels as novel analgesic targets. Itinvolves identification and characterisation of structurally distinct and functionally importantregions of sodium channels. These proteins are then used as targets for drug screening using biophysical assays.

The second project is entitledA new source of bivalent molecules from nature. It aims to discover and characterise disulfide rich peptides with a tandem repeat architecture. The candidate will identify, produce and characterise novel tandem repeat peptides with the aim of discovering new proteinstructural arrangements and unique biological activities for development of drugs and insecticides.

Students will enrol through the Queensland Brain Institute or the School of Biomedical Sciences.

We invite applications from students with a background in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Biophysics, or Molecular Biology.

The 2019 Research Training Program (RTP) living allowance stipend rate is AUD$27,596 per annum (indexed annually), which is tax-free for three years with two possible extensions of up to 6 months each in approved circumstances (conditions apply).Click here further information on this scholarship.
