PhD in Innovative Strengthening Strategies for Protection of Existing Masonry Structures Against Natural Hazards.

A new PhD position in composite materials is available at The University of Nottingham. The funding allows successful candidate to work for 3 years. Potential candidates should apply before November 08, 2019.

The main aim of this project is to develop novel, durable and sustainable strengthening composites from textile reinforced mortars for strengthening of existing masonry structures.

Composite materials have been extensively used for externally bonded reinforcement of reinforced concrete and masonry structures. In case of masonry buildings, the use of composite materials made of inorganic matrices such as Textile Reinforced Mortars (TRMs) have recently received great attention. The key idea behind TRMs lies in the impregnation of multidirectional textiles within an inorganic mortar which also contributes to promoting sustainable construction materials. TRMs offer several advantages, in comparison to conventional Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs), such as sustainability and compatibility with masonry substrate. Application of these materials, however, is still at is early ages and several issues remaining the performance of these composites in the field remain open. The main aim of this project is to develop innovative TRMs with improved durability and mechanical performance for protection of existing structures against different hazards. The project will be implemented combining experimental testing and numerical simulation activities.

The PhD position is available from 1 December 2019 (earlier start dates will be considered). The studentship covers both tuition fees and a tax-free student stipend at RCUK rates (15,009 per annum) for 2019/20 academic year. Duration is 3 years.

Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is open to UK/EU candidates only.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated person with good interpersonal skills and a keen interest in research. You must have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honors degree or a distinction or high merit at MSc level (or international equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Materials science, mathematics or a related subject. Preference will be given to candidates with educational and/or research experience in engineering and materials science. Experience in object-oriented programming (especially with Python or Fortran) would be an advantage, but not essential. The candidate will be expected to have good interpersonal skills.

This studentship is open until filled. Early application is strongly encouraged.

When applying for this studentship, please include the reference number (beginning ENG) within the personal statement section of the application. This will help in ensuring your application is sent directly to the academic advertising the studentship. Please also ensure you submit a covering letter and CV.
