The research lab of Dr. Michael Holinstat in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI is in search of a postdoctoral Research Fellow. The selected candidate will investigate platelet biochemical and physiological steps in the regulation of blood coagulation in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo by fatty acid lipid regulators. They will be afforded the ability to work in an open-lab environment with access to all of its state-of-the-art equipment in order to gain a greater understanding of hemostasis and thrombosis in the in vivo, in vitro, and ex vivo setting in both human and small animal models.

The lab maintains state-of-the-art hemostasis and thrombosis facilities including lumi-aggregometers, flow cytometer, hemavet, a microscopy facility containing 2 zeiss microscopes with the capacity for in vivo intravital confocal microscopy and single-cell high resolution microscopy, PCR machines, a multi-mode plate reader, and a phlebotomy suite with full-time phlebotomist. The lab is situated in the heart of Michigan Medicine within steps of a multitude of research resources and easy access to collaborators, the clinics, and animal facilities.

The project the selected candidate will focus on is the regulation of platelets in health and cardiovascular disease. In particular, how fatty acids can regulate platelet reactivity leading to myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke is a major focus of the lab. They will test novel anti-platelet therapeutics for minimizing thrombosis without significantly increasing the risk of bleeding using human platelet studies ex vivo and mouse models in vivo.

A PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degree is required. A background in physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or other related biomedical discipline is required.

Experience working with small animals is a plus. Experience with flow cytometry, western blot techniques, and working in a team environment is recommended but not required.
