Postdoctoral Position in In Artificial Topological Matter

Chalmers University of Technology is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening postdoc position in nanotechnology. This position is available for four years in the first instance. Candidates are welcome before August 05, 2019.

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment.

Information about the project

The group of Attila Geresdi, where the project is embedded in, will work on hybrid quantum electronics, and will harness the combination of semiconductors and superconductors to build and measure novel device architectures. The PI will start in September, 2019, and the first PhD students and postdocs are expected to join in the fall semester of 2019.

Major responsibilities

As a postdoctoral researcher, the focus of your project will be to build hybrid nanostructures to observe topological electron states. The work involves nanofabrication, quantum transport experiments and microwave reflectometry of low-dimensional superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanodevices. The overarching goal of the research is to establish topological ordering in an artificial Kitaev chain. The program is funded by an ERC Starting Grant, entitled Simulated Majorana states (SiMS). You will interact and exchange ideas with external academic collaborators, and will present your results in international conferences. You will be helping supervise PhD and MSc students.

Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master’s levels as well as supervising master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1). Further extensions can be discussed.

You have a PhD degree in a relevant scientific discipline. You are a motivated experimentalist with experience in low temperature quantum transport and/or microwave reflectometry. You have prior nanofabrication experience in a clean room environment. You have experience with instrumentation control, preferably in one of the Python-based frameworks. You are a creative person who can shape his/her own research, and has a great potential in research, student supervision and education.

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a physics; the degree should generally not be older than four years.

The position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Chalmers offers Swedish courses for non-native speakers.
