Postdoctoral Position in Fluidized Bed Technology for Energy Applications

A new postdoctoral position in inorganic chemistry is available at Chalmers University of Technology. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for three years in Sweden. Applicants should apply before September 30, 2019.

The Department of Space, Earth and Environment contains five divisions, with research and education spanning from global challenges related to sustainability and energy supply to astronomy and space sciences. The department is host to two major infrastructures, Onsala Space Observatory and Chalmers Power Central, and consists of about 250 employees.

Information about the research, division and department

The division of Energy Technology offers a Post-doc position focused on the topic of fluid-dynamics and mixing in fluidized beds for large-scale applications within the energy field.

The post-doc position has a focus on investigating key underlying mechanisms governing the conversion process in large-scaled fluidized bed units (combustors, gasifiers and chemical looping for CO2 capture). The mechanisms in focus are those related to the fluid-dynamics, the fuel mixing and the mass transfer between the gas and the solids (bulk solids and fuel particles). The research tasks include both planning, leading and execution of experimental work and the subsequent data analysis with help of modeling tools. The research will be performed in collaboration with senior researchers in the division and international partners. The resources at hand include fluid-dynamically downscaled units, including scale model of an existing utility-scale CFB boiler, combined with experimental diagnostic tools such as optical probes, magnetic particle tracking systems and coil detection systems.

The division has a long experience in the topic of fluidization technology for large-scale thermo-chemical conversion. The division conducts research at different levels; experimental and modelling at reactor and process levels, process simulations of different energy and industrial processes and energy systems analysis of entire national and regional energy systems. The division has extensive cooperation with industry and governmental organizations and the results from the research are disseminated in the academic community and to different stakeholders in society. The topic of the post doc is in line with the goals and strategy of the division, to maintain and strengthen the strong position of fluidized-bed research for thermochemical applications.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility as post-doc is to perform your own research in a research group and merit yourself by producing high quality research to be reported in scientific journals. The position also includes supervision of master thesis and co-supervision of PhD students. In addition, you are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research to relevant partners and stakeholders. You are also expected to take active part in building and maintaining collaborative links with relevant members of the research team at the Division of Energy Technology. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in Energy Technology, Inorganic Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Physics or other related disciplines; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

Furthermore we see that you have an outstanding academic track record and published as first author in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals. Youre also highly proficient in spoken and written English, creative and able to drive and conclude projects interdependently. You have a nack for problem-solving and often take own initiatives and discuss/develop own ideas. Leadership, cooperation and social abilities are important, and experience in research or research cooperation with Asian countries, especially China, is valued.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
