The Laboratory for Mesocopic Systems based at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is a joint laboratory between the ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute, which is the largest research centre for the natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. The current research focus is the investigation of novel magnetic and complex oxide thin film systems and nanostructures, making use of the clean rooms and large scale facilities at the Paul Scherrer Institute, and fostering the synergies with the Department of Materials (ETH Zurich). Postdoctoral Fellow to be employed at PSI

We are looking for a candidate who will run a basic pulsed laser deposition system and fabricate high quality thin films, composites and multilayers, and fabricate nanostructures and devices with electron beam lithography. He/she will carry out research that fits with one or more of the research fields of Mesoscopic Systems including frustrated spin systems, ultrafast processes, hybrid systems and antiferromagnetic spintronics. He/she will study the static properties of the system with large scale facilities (synchrotron x-rays and neutrons) and study ultrafast processes with lab-based equipment and at x-ray free electron lasers. He/she will perform measurements with and take responsibility for the x-ray Diffractometer, SQUID and PPMS measurement systems.

The successful candidate has excellent qualifications with a PhD in physics, materials science or a related subject are expected, with a high-quality track record in research. Extensive experience with magnetic thin films created with pulsed laser deposition and related characterization tools is required. Knowledge of lithography and large-scale facility measurements would also be helpful. Good teamwork and communication skills are required, with a proactive approach to drive forward research in collaboration with different laboratories at the Paul Scherrer Institute and internationally.
