Postdoc Position X2 at Imperial College London

Two Research Associate positions are available in the new Department of Immunology and Inflammation at the Imperial College Hammersmith campus.

The post holders will work on an exciting research project on tissue stress-surveillance and links between 'allergic' type 2/IgE responses and cancer in the laboratory of Dr Jessica Strid.

The core aim of the research programme is to understand how the IgE-FcRI axis provides tumour-protective immunity. The study is built on our novel findings demonstrating that epithelial cell damage in mice induces de novo production of IgE antibodies that modulate susceptibility to skin cancer. We will now explore the mechanism(s) driving the IgE-mediated host-protection and characterise the role of the IgE-FcRI axis in human cutaneous squamous cell cancer (cSCC).

Skin cancers are extremely common. The incidence exceeds that of all other cancers combined and is increasing year-on-year. While most cSCCs are treatable, a substantial number recur or metastasize and these have very poor prognosis. Remarkably, the frequency of cancer driving mutations in healthy skin is comparable to that in cSCCs, suggesting that there are prevailing physiological mechanisms which constrain cancer outgrowth. These mechanisms are poorly characterised, but a key role for local immunity is evident from the dramatic increase in cSCC rates amongst immunosuppressed individuals.

1) One post will identify the mechanism(s) of IgE mediated tissue immune-surveillance. This work will utilise in vivo models, including humanized mouse models and patient-derived xenografts. Previous experience with in vivo immunology, FACS, imaging and molecular techniques would be advantageous.

2) One post will investigate the role of B cells in cSCC. This study will explore the functions of tissue B cells, the possibility of in situ class switching in tumours and investigate the B cell repertoire in human cSCC. Previous experience with B cell biology, FACS, repertoire analysis and imaging would be advantageous.

You should be highly motivated and enthusiastic and should hold a PhD (or be in the final stages of completion) in immunology or other relevant discipline. You will be joining a collaborative research environment and we expect you will have strong organisational and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The positions are funded by a Wellcome Trust Investigator Award and are available for 3 years in the first instance.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range 34,397 – 37,486 per annum.
