Phd/postdoc Position in Electrochemical Co2 Reduction

Applications are invited for a PhD position in material sciences to join Technical University of Denmark. The funds for this fellowship are available for 3 years. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before August 04, 2019.

This is an open call for potentially multiple positions for either a PhD student or a post-doc focusing on the electrochemical CO reduction. The focus will be on creating catalysts selective for a given product and their integration into scalable reactors.This project will primarily take place at DTU Physics, and potentially may involve collaboration with a variety of global companies as well as other leading universities in the field. We are working to build a collection of people who can fulfill the tasks needed for a variety of CO2 related projects.

Specifically we are looking to synthesize a variety of facet controlled nanoparticles using either wet chemical of vapour deposition techniques. In addition single crystal work will be investigated to give a more pure understanding of catalysis. A detailed characterization of our catalysts will be employed using techniques such as XPS, ISS, SEM, TEM, STM, XRD, and potentially in-situ electrochemical XRD at a synchrotron facility.

All created catalysts will then be tested either in aqueous cells or gas diffusion electrode type cells to determine catalytic activity and selectivity, with our primary focus products being CO, acetaldehyde, ethanol, and ethylene. Testing will done at small currents via our internally designed cells that use a mass spectrometer, which will entail knowledge of how to operate in a vacuum environment. More applied tests will be done in fuel cell/electrolyzer type reactors using gas chromatographs. Liquids will be detected via HPLC or NMR. Parameters such as electrical potential, temperature, reactant flow rate, humidity and others will all be varied to monitor catalyst performance.

There will be a large amount of building and reactor modifications, thus piping, thermocouples, mass flow meters, etc. will need to be installed and often programmed in Python to mesh with current internal software. This means that there is a large amount of hands on work and a wide variety of technical knowledge relating to fundamental catalysis understanding, materials characteristics, programming, gas chromatographs and membrane electrode assembly production will all be needed to allow for accurate testing of the catalysts.

The project will take place primarily in the Surface Science and Catalysis (SurfCat) section at the Department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), but may also involve working with Siemens located at DTU Scion.

The successful candidate will be well-motivated, hardworking, open minded and willing and able to work as part of a team.The candidate should have a Masters (PhD position) or PhD degree (postdoc position) in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science or a similar field or will expect to have that degree within the immediate future.It is mandatory that the candidate has extensive experimental experience working with electrochemical reactions. Experience with analytical tools such as gas chromatography, NMR, and HPLC would be very helpful.The ideal candidate(s) would have experience with high current density electrochemical reactions (gas diffusion electrodes, >100 mA/cm 2 ) preferably in the CO reduction field. If one has experience working with vacuum systems, that would also be quite beneficial. Approval and Enrolment (Only Relevant for PhD Candidates) For those with Masters degrees applying for a PhD, the scholarship for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU, for example in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics.
