Phd/postdoc Position for Experimental Investigations of The Thermodydamics and Kinetics of Deposition of Barite and Other Hard Scales in Flowing Environments

The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (DHRTC), invites applicants for a PhD or Postdoc position on barite scale formation chemistry and kinetics at flowing conditions. DHRTC is a multidisciplinary research centre established by the Danish Underground Consortium and DTU. As part of the Danish national strategy on energy resources, the Centre carries out cross-disciplinary research on improved and environmentally optimized strategies for production of conventional energy resources.

Deposits of hard and soft scale and corrosion of materials are contributing factors for potential loss of integrity in flowing systems of complex fluid mixtures which involve high saline brines. Such systems include petroleum wells, geothermal wells, carbon capture and storage systems, central heating systems and water cleaning facilities amongst many others. Chemical changes in the aqueous phase in flowing systems may affect the rate of scale precipitation and corrosion, potentially to the point of negating any targeted improvement in performance. Therefore, improved understanding of observed mechanisms and development of testing methods as well as improved modelling tools for predicting and potentially mitigating scale deposit and corrosion is essential for optimal and energy efficient operation of such systems. The DHRTC research program and this advertised position on scale aims to improve the understanding of the complex and coupled chemical mechanisms that govern the deposition of scales (e.g. CaCO , BaSO , SrSO , FeCO , FeS). The project will involve work with partner laboratories at DTU and with the team in the analytical chemistry and modelling groups at DHRTC.

The candidate will work on a primarily experimental project which will be an integrated part of the program concerning scale and corrosion at the DHRTC. The plan for this project is experimental studies of the kinetics of formation of primarily BaSO and potentially other insoluble scales with focus on nucleation and flow regimes. The project will focus on setting up a flow cell to simulate realistic pipe flow wherein the factors influencing scale build-up can be controlled. The flow cell will be equipped with different sampling ports and and equipment for monitoring the solid and the fluid chemistry during the experiment. In addition to this project, the studies of BaSO scale currently includes two linked a projects at Heriot-Watt University and at the The candidate is expected to work closely with these partners and the team at DHRTC to perform innovative, fundamental, and applied research on: Techniques used for analysis include X-ray tomography, GC-MS/LC-MS, spectroscopic equipment (FTIR/UV), ICP-OES, SEM, IFT equipment and experience with some of these methods is an advantage.

The line-of-sight application potential of this project is to assist in reaching a better understanding of the conditions that lead to scale build up in flowing systems. Candidates may apply for thePhD positionprior to obtaining their master’s degree, but cannot begin before having received it.
