PhD Studentship Distance Interpreting at University of Surrey

University of Surrey, UK is offering PhD position in computer science. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for 2 years in UK. Applications should be submitted as soon as possible.

This project offers full scholarships (at Home/EU rates) to suitable PhD candidates who wish to work on one or various forms of technology-enabled interpreting.

Established in 1982, the University of Surrey Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) is one of the UK's leading centres for research, scholarship and teaching in translation and interpreting. CTS has recently secured funding for strategic expansion, which will enable the centre to integrate its established expertise in how professional translators/interpreters interact with, and adapt to, emerging technological ecosystems with research into the automation of these practices. This expansion project seeks to recruit eligible PhD candidates who are willing to conduct research in the following area: PhD in Distance Interpreting; We are seeking a candidate who is interested in pursuing a PhD in the area of video-mediated distance interpreting. We encourage project ideas aiming to deepen our understanding of different aspects of the interpreting process in technology-mediated environments, for example: multimodal aspects of remote work and their effects on interaction and cognition; evaluation of different system designs in relation to the specific features of different settings (e.g. emergency settings, collaborative vs. adversarial settings, etc.); novel forms of mobile interpreting; workplace ergonomics, organisational and occupational dimensions, well-being and user experience in distance interpreting; technologies to support the interpreting performance when working remotely.

The successful candidate will need to rely on a solid, eclectic mixed-methods approach benefiting from cross-fertilization among different disciplines (e.g. multimodality, human-computer interaction, interactive technologies) and triangulating findings from, for instance, sensor and imaging technologies (e.g. eye tracking, EEG, MRI) to record and measure different physiological and neurocognitive variables, with usability testing and user experience data and/or more traditional performance and self-reflective analysis data. Projects will be evaluated on the basis of their originality and methodological innovation. The successful candidate will benefit from excellent technological working conditions, international contacts, and a stimulating interdisciplinary work environment.

First class or upper second class BA and Master's level degree (or international equivalent) in Translation Studies, Linguistics, Computer Science or related field.
