PhD Scholarship Position on Molecular Doping of Conjugated Polymers

A fully-funded PhD fellowship in sustainable energy is available at Chalmers University of Technology. The funding allows successful candidate to work for 4 years. Applicants should apply before August 16, 2019.

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. We are looking for a highly motivated student to join our research group at Chalmers.

Organic semiconductors receive considerable attention for a wide range of applications from solar cells and light emitting diodes to thermoelectrics. Redox molecular doping is an important process that allows to control the electrical properties: addition of a so-called molecular dopant followed by electron transfer between the semiconducting host material and the dopant introduces electric charges. One aspect that requires significant improvement is the ionisation efficiency, i.e. the amount of charges that are generated per dopant molecule. Molecular dopants are thought to give rise to a maximum of one charge in case of complete charge transfer, which corresponds to a ionisation efficiency of 100% (even though in practice this number is lower because not every dopant molecule becomes ionised). We have recently reported that one of the most widely studied monomer p-dopants can form dianions upon doping of polar polythiophenes, i.e. two charges are generated per dopant molecule, which translates into a maximum ionisation efficiency of 200% (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-018-0263-6).

The knowledge that you will gain by answering these research questions will enable you to provide a more complete picture of the fundamental aspects of double doping. It can be anticipated that your project will considerably enhance our understanding of molecular doping processes, which will ultimately be of considerable benefit for many emerging applications of organic semiconductors.

Information about the research group

The Mller Research Group focuses on the physical chemistry and materials science of organic semiconductors, polymer blends and composites, and develops new plastic materials for energy technologies ranging from organic solar cells and thermoelectrics to power cables. All research is conducted in co-operation with other universities/institutes and/or industry. Presently, the Mller Research Group consists of 1 Professor, 1 Research Staff, 3 Postdocs, 7 PhD students and several Master students.

Major responsibilities

The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research studies including processing, doping and characterisation of organic semiconductors as well as spectroscopic and electrical measurements. As a PhD student you are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in writing. In addition, the position will normally include 5-10% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

Full-time temporary employment.The employment is limited to a maximum of 4 years full-time research studies.

Qualifications

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits. The successful candidate must have a master’s level degree in Chemistry, Physics, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, or equivalent with a focus on Polymer Science. Previous experience with conjugated polymers and organic electronics is required.

Further, practical experience with processing and the structural, spectroscopic and electrical/electronic characterisation of conjugated polymers is preferred. Previous exposure to materials characterisation tools such as spectroscopy (UV-vis, FTIR, PL), thermal analysis (DSC, TGA), X-ray diffraction (WAXS, SAXS), optical microscopy, AFM, SEM, TEM, rheology, DMA as well as electrical/electronic measurement techniques is a merit. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, the candidate is expected to have excellent collaboration skills. A very good capability of communicating scientific results in English, both orally and in writing is required.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
