PhD Scholarship or Postdoc Position in Barite Scale Formation at Well Conditions

A new PhD position in environmental sciences is available at Technical University of Denmark. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before August 15, 2019.

The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Center for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE), invites applicants for a PhD or postdoc position in Barite Scale Formation at Well Conditions.

CERE is Denmark's leading research center in the areas of EOR, flow assurance, CCS and petroleum geoscience. CERE is an independent, university based, research unit with more than 30 years of expertise in the field. The CERE co-workers are a mix of internationally renowned scientists and the sharpest young talents from different scientific communities around the world.

Scale formation in the production equipment of the oil and gas industry poses a general challenge. It tends to build up on the interior pipe wall both downhole and in the upper part of the well and production tubular. A significant amount of scale will eventually precipitate which can cause a failure of downhole safety valves or a complete stop of production due to loss of internal diameter of the pipe from excessive scale formation. Scales may also cause under deposit corrosion and there is a great need to understand why and where the scales are formed.The objective is to reduce the cost of well workovers by developing better methods to predict scale formation. The scales in focus during this study is BaSO The aim of this study is to measure the solubility of BaSO4 under well conditions and to fill in the gaps between the data published in the open literature. In some temperature and pressure ranges, previously published data for BaSO4 solubility from different sources are not in agreement. Existing thermodynamic models at DTU are available for supporting the design of experiments.

Applicants for PhD scholarship should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. The Master's degree should be in analytical or physical chemistry, environmental sciences or similar. Applicants for the Postdoc position should have a PhD degree in analytical or physical chemistry, environmental sciences or similar.
