Technical University of Denmark is delighted to offer a PhD position in photonics. Applications are welcome before August 16, 2019.

A general trend in the modern energy landscape is the exploitation of potentialities for combining multiple distributed energy resources like wind power and solar PV, with energy storage and demand response. The objective of the PhD is to research energy management system functionality to balance the energy capacity. At Ris Campus there are excellent research facilities including SYSLAB intelligent energy systems facility to support the research.
The objective of this PhD project is to develop, implement and test an Energy Management System (EMS) for an isolated Hybrid Power System (HPS) consisting of wind turbines, solar PV and Electrical Energy Storage (EES) systems as well as controllable and uncontrollable consumption. The EMS uses forecasts to optimize the operation of the HPS. The EMS aims to minimize the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) while maintaining adequate quality of power.
The project is joint between DTU Elektro, DTU Wind Energy and DTU Fotonik. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with Vestas. The student will be enrolled at DTU Elektro.
The PhD project intends to answer the following research questions: Each of the research questions above define a theoretical activity in the PhD project. The experimental facility SYSLAB at Ris Campus will be extensively used during the PhD project. SYSLAB provides an ideal experimental platform for the PhD research. It can provide data for model validation and serve as hardware/software base for implementation of EMS controlling real wind turbines, PV systems, batteries and flexible consumption.
