PhD Position Unlocking The Next Generation of Oxide Electronic Devices

Outstanding international students are invited to apply for a PhD scholarship in sustainable energy at Technical University of Denmark. The funds for this fellowship are available for 3 years. Potential candidates should apply before July 15, 2019.

Do you want to work in the field of advanced materials and be involved in high profile research project on the forefront of science?

We have an available position as a PhD student in the Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy), Technical Universityof Denmark (DTU) on a research project dealing with enhancing material properties with light stimuli and magnetic fields. This is a collaborative work within the EuroTech Universities Alliance where another PhD working on related area will be hired at the Oxide Electronics Group, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.

Oxide heterostructures, such as the canonical LaAlO /SrTiO heterostructure, have gained immense attention recently as they exhibit a wealth of exciting and co-existing properties including gate-tunable superconductivity, ferromagnetism and persistent photocurrent. As many of these properties go well beyond what is typically used in traditional electronics based on semiconductors, the oxides have the potential for being used to design novel electronic components based on fundamentally different operating principles or energy-saving strategies. We have for several years worked extensively on SrTiO -based heterostructures and discovered a multitude of exciting properties. Recently, we have found the highest positive magnetoresistance of any oxide material and have developed a scheme to hopefully obtain the highest positive magnetoresistance in the world! The proposed research project is to explore the possibility of making such a magnetoresistive device. On top of this, we will use light to enhance the properties (magnetoresistance as well as other) of the heterostructures, which may lead to interesting components that couples light and electrons and thus can be operated using both light and electrostatic potential.

Candidates should hold a Master's degree (or equivalent), preferably in a physics, nanoscience, or a materials science-related discipline.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
