PhD in Vision Sciences Contact Lenses for Myopia Management

Cardiff University has an opening PhD position in optometry. The deadline to apply is July 26, 2019.

Applications are invited for a part-time PhD studentship in contact lenses for myopia management at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences.

In recent years, a number of soft contact lenses have become licensed for myopia management. These lenses are designed to be worn by myopic children, with the aim of slowing the rate of progression of myopia. The optical design of the lenses is such that peripheral myopic defocus (peripheral blur) is induced, with a view to reducing the stimulus for axial elongation that increases the level of myopia. Induced optical blur has previously been shown to affect choroidal thickness in the short-term, and the role of the choroid in myopia development has been theorised.

In this PhD, you will fit children with myopia control contact lenses, and use techniques to image the choroid of children with and without these lenses, to investigate the short- and long-term changes to the choroidal structure.
