Research Assistant at University of Cambridge

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scholar position in earth sciences to join University of Cambridge. Applications are invited up to July 14, 2019.

A two year 50% FTE position exists for a Research Associate in Environmental Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory.

The role holder will contribute to a team investigating environmental factors affecting water quality in the Peruvian Andes. The role holder will be responsible for gathering information on the extent to which the geochemistry of the rocks in the headwaters, and throughout the different river courses, affects the water geochemistry. They will be responsible for gathering samples for major, trace and isotopic geochemical analysis, arranging and conducting analyses and interpreting the data for publication.

They will work closely collaborating Peruvian Universities providing any training necessary to students and staff.

The role holder will support the continuation of the broader project aims through grant writing. This is an ambitious research programme, with a strong interdisciplinary nature across the natural sciences, and the role holder will be expected to contribute and discuss science broadly within the team.

Appointment at research associate is dependent on having a PhD in Earth Sciences or a closely related discipline with a proven track record as a field geologist specialising in volcanology and sedimentology (or equivalent experience). We will also consider those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD (in which case appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded). The research assistant salary (grade 5) falls within the range 26,243 to 30,395. The research associate (grade 7) salary falls within the range 32,236 to 39,609.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in remote localities, especially at high altitude. They will have knowledge of and experience in current geochemical and geochronological techniques as demonstrated by publications in major journals.

The candidate will have the ability to work independently and as part of a team working under challenging conditions in remote locations.
