Postdoctoral Position in New Cellulose Fibers From The Existing Process

Chalmers University of Technology is offering postdoctoral position in sustainable energy. The funds for this fellowship are available for three years. Applications should be sent before June 28, 2019.

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. The research activities reach from DNA-research and biomaterials to high temperature corrosion, catalysis and recycling. The Department is also heavily committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, as well as postgraduate level in these areas.

Health, natural resources, sustainable energy and materials are some of our lead words and our vision is "Through curiosity and knowledge towards a sustainable world". We have approximately 300 employees, divided into four research and one administrative division. We are situated at campus Johanneberg in the middle of Gothenburg. Information about the research

Sdra Skogsgarna started Avancell in 2005 as a research and idea network between Chalmers and industrial partners with the aim of creating value from the forest, economically supported by the Sdra Skogsgarna Foundation for Research, Development and Education. The network in Avancell has changed and developed during the years depending of the focus of the research challenges, and companies like SCA Hygiene, Tetra Pak and BillerudKorsns, an institute (Swerea IVF) and universities (like Chalmers Univeristy of technology and Lund University) have joined the network and contributed with their competences in specific research questions. In total 21 PhD projects started and so far 14 PhDs have graduated. These PhDs has shown to be very attractive for the Swedish community and have got prestigious positions at both universities and in forest companies.

The current version of Avancell (“New fibers from the existing process”) is structured around the existing bleaching processes as a starting point to control and modify pulp properties. Two PhD studetns started about one year ago in two parallel projects investigating two different routes to accomplish modification of pulp properties based on current bleaching methods. Initially each of the Post doc projects will be linked to both PhD projects and further evaluate the adsorption and modification of fiber surfaces, as well as join efforts to directed towards development of fiber networks with specific properties.

Major responsibilities

The main responsibilities for the Post Doc candidate, together with the Avancell team, will be to investigate possibilities of developing novel matrials based on sorption of polymers to fiber surfaces in the existing bleaching process and chemical modification of the surface of the fibers. This will be useful knowledge to accomplish modification of the pulp in terms of strength, stiffness, porosity and density. The focus of the work will be to gain fundamental understanding of the sorption/desorption process and chemical modifications performed in the current bleaching processes and based on that work out strategies to employ this chemistry for specific functionalisation of pulp.

The results will be disseminated through project meetings, workshops, scientific publications and conference presentations.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of fourteen months.

Qualifications

The Post Doc candidate should have a PhD in Materials or Chemical Engineering or equivalent.

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
