The Doctoral Programme in Economics at the University of Helsinki invite applications for salaried doctoral candidate positions (1-4 positions) for a 1-4 year period starting from 1 September 2019.

The salaried positions are primarily intended for doctoral candidates at the beginning of their doctoral studies to work full-time on their dissertation research and post-graduate studies. The aim is to complete a PhD degree in four years. The actual duration of the employment contract depends on the phase of the appointee's thesis and funding position of the doctoral programme. As a rule, the positions are filled from 1 September 2019. The exact start and end dates will be specified in the employment contract.

The doctoral candidates selected for the positions are employed by and carry out their research in the Discipline of Economics. The duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on their doctoral thesis and to complete the doctoral studies determined by the doctoral programme's curriculum. The duties may also include teaching and other tasks for up to 5 % of the annual working time.

The salary for the doctoral candidate position is based on level 2-4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. For doctoral candidates at the beginning of their dissertation work, the beginning salary is usually based on level 2. In addition, the doctoral candidate will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. Altogether, depending on the phase of the dissertation research and the doctoral candidate's qualifications and experience, the salary (in 2018) is EUR 2085-3205 per month. The appointment starts with a probationary period of maximum 6 months.

Who can apply for a salaried doctoral candidate position?

Applicants should have a Master's degree or equivalent in Economics or Finance. Applicants should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki or be applying it in the September 2019 round of applications.

You can apply for a salaried doctoral candidate position on a fixed-term employment contract if

1. you have an active right to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki and have not yet been employed as a doctoral candidate for a full 4-year period, or 2. you have not yet been granted the right to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki but you match the research profile of the doctoral programme and meet the eligibility criteria for the right to study for a doctoral degree. Please note that the right to study for a doctoral degree is a precondition for beginning employment in a salaried doctoral candidate position. Therefore, should you not already have it, you need to get the right to study in the Doctoral Programme in Economics for a doctoral degree within six months from the start of the contract (i.e. participating September 2019 application round). All applications for doctoral candidate positions must be submitted using an online electronic form and including in the application the required attachments.

In the form, you are expected to fill in the following information: - your personal information, - educational information on your previous studies, - your language skills and the language of your dissertation, - research plan (see instructions:…), - supervision arrangements, - previously acquired knowledge supporting the dissertation project, as well as - your study plan (for degree requirements and current courses, see University of Helsinki Doctoral Schools in the WebOodi course catalogue service: In addition to filling in the required fields, you need to scan and attach to the electronic application (in pdf-format) - your original Master's degree diploma or its officially certified copy, - the original transcript of records for your Master's degree or its officially certified copy, and - official translations of the above documents, if the original documents are not in Finnish, Swedish, or English. The applications are evaluated based on the quality of the research plan, available supervision arrangements, and the ability and motivation, as demonstrated through previous studies, academic performance, or other previously acquired knowledge and experience, to pursue the doctoral degree according to the research plan and the accompanying study plan. The research plan must fit the research profile of the doctoral programme.

The board of the doctoral programme makes a proposal on the candidates selected for funding. The board's proposal is contingent upon the applicant's ability to obtain the required eligibility for the right to study for a doctoral degree.

The names of the applicants who have been selected for the doctoral candidate positions will be published on the doctoral programme's website by July 12, 2019. All applicants will be personally informed on the decisions.

Based on the proposal by the board of the doctoral programme, the decision on the fixed-term contract is made by the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. At the start of the employment contract, the doctoral candidate must be living in Finland.
