PhD Scholarship Position in Computational Catalysis at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden is inviting excellent students to apply for a PhD position in sustainable energy. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for five years in Sweden. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before June 29, 2019.

Information about Chemical Physics

The main theme for the research at Chemical Physics is the development of sustainable energy systems by use of heterogeneous catalysis for alternative fuel production, emission control, energy storage, and fuel cells. The research is interdisciplinary with strong connections between fundamental and applied science. Chemical Physics is a dynamic and international environment that strives for scientific excellence through teamwork and combined theoretical and experimental efforts. The activity within heterogeneous catalysis is a part of the national Competence Centre for Catalysis located at Chalmers.

Information about the research

The theoretical activities at Chemical Physics focus on electronic structure calculations within the density functional theory together with mean-field modeling and Monte Carlo simulations for reaction kinetics. By this type of multiscale modeling it is possible to bridge length and time scales and connect to experimental observations. Theoretical spectroscopy is used together with experimental observations to scrutinize fundamental reaction mechanisms and processes.

The PhD position is financed by the Swedish Research Council and is directed towards the development of first principle based methods for reaction kinetics over nanoparticles. The starting point of the project is our recently developed platform for nanoparticle kinetics using scaling relations and kinetic Monte Carlo. The target reactions include CO reduction and selective hydrogenation. The project has strong connections to the existing activities at the division and include industrial collaborations.

Major responsibilities

Research at a 90-100% level where the remaining part is teaching and departmental work.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

(1) Master of Science in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science

(2) Good communication skills in written and spoken English

(3) Able to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of the project

(4) Candidates with experience in computational/theoretical physics and chemistry are meritorious.

(5) Experience in programming

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.
