PhD Scholarship Position in Uhbr Engine Nacelle Installation

Chalmers University of Technology is offering PhD position in mechanical engineering. The funding allows successful candidate to work for 5 years. Candidates are welcome before July 31, 2019.

Information about the department

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. M2 holds one of Sweden's most extensive simulator centres for navigation and propulsion of ships, as well as world-class laboratories within combustion engineering and wind tunnels. The department also offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, to mention a few. In addition, professional education is performed on both a national and international level, with specifically designed mission training for different societal actors within our ambition for lifelong learning. The department continuously strives to establish a cooperation between academia, industry, and society, with a great focus on utilization of our research results. M2 consists of seven different divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support.

Information about the division

At the division of Fluid Dynamics, the research covers turbulent flow (compressible and incompressible), turbomachines, aero-acoustics, and multi-phase flow. Our tools include both computations and experiments. Our mission is to gain fundamental knowledge about turbulent incompressible and compressible flows through numerical and experimental research and develop new and improved computational and experimental techniques for the study of such flows in both fundamental and real-world environments. Our applied research is carried out in close cooperation with industry, both in national projects and in EU projects. Applications include aircraft, vehicles (cars, trucks, buses and trains, etc.), aircraft engines, water turbines and water power stations, wind turbines, aircraft engines, biotechnological applications, pharmaceutics, and paper and pulp industry. Our division is part of Chalmers Sustainable Transport Initiative, Chalmers eScience Initiative and Chalmers Energy Initiative.

This PhD project will be conducted at the research group turbomachinery and aero-acoustics in the division. This group has long-term expertise on future engine concept designs as well as multi-objective design optimization of compressor blades, rotorcraft aerodynamics, compressor design, unsteady aerodynamics and aero-acoustics on propeller blades, aerodynamic/performance optimization, computer programming. Special emphasis is on radical aircraft configurations, such as intercooler concepts, or boundary layer ingesting concept. The research on detailed turbulence characteristics (e.g., turbomachinery, jet flows and noise) has developed and applied the CFD methods and tools for DNS, LES, hybrid RANS/LES, unsteady-RANS, RANS, linearized Navier-Stokes equations, turbulence modeling, semi-empirical stochastic modeling, numerical schemes, finite volume method, finite element method, boundary element method, coupling approaches for fluid-structural interaction, shape optimization, and active flow and noise control strategies. The methods and tools developed by us have been incorporated into our in-house codes (G3D::Flow, etc.,), open-source codes (OpenFOAM, etc.) and commercial soft wares (ANSYS, STAR-CCM+, etc.).

Information about the project

The PhD position is funded by a large Clean Sky 2 project with a total budget of 3.5 MEUR that is coordinated by Chalmers, which is motivated by the long term vision to reduce exhaust emissions (CO2, NOx and noise, etc.) for creation of a sustainable society. The project aims to develop a set of new numerical and experimental methodologies to address the installation effect of ultra-high bypass ratio engine nacelles and further design installed nacelles for future sustainable aircraft. Our group will develop a new engine design method based on our in-house code GESTPAN, develop a cutting-edge Python code for analysis of installation, and conduct numerical simulations and analyses using newest advanced turbulence modeling methods implemented in the DLR-TAU code. The work will be performed in close collaboration with one eminent aerospace EU enterprise and five famous EU research organizations with recognized long-period research track in the field of aircraft propulsion systems. In addition, the PhD will obtain a unique chance to establish wide contacts with seniors from the Swedish aeronautic industry.

Major responsibilities

As a PhD student, the major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing in English.

- Teaching duty and other department duties for the minimum amount of 10% of total working hours.

- Full-time temporary employment for 4,5-5 years depending on the amount of department duties, where 10% is a minimum.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or in a relevant field of turbomachinery or fluid mechanics. As you will work in close collaboration with an eminent EU aeronautic enterprise and five famous EU research organizations, sound verbal and written communication skills in English are required.

You have an analytical ability and you like to work in interdisciplinary projects and you have the ability to discuss and communicate your work with people of different backgrounds.

- Knowledge in data analysis (data mining, etc.).

- Swedish is not required, but you will be encouraged to learn Swedish during employment.
