Subject description
The research area of this doctoral student deals with Massive MIMO, a wireless communication technique gaining much attention as a cornerstone for 5th generation wireless systems and beyond since a massive number of antennas and transceiver chains lead to large gains in spectral and energy efficiencies. Due to the large industrial interest in the area, we have initiated a large joint research project with Ericsson AB, where we jointly are going to investigate different aspects of massive MIMO technologies and applications. This particular position is focused on radio channel characterization and modelling for mm wave systems using a large number of antennas. Of special interest are the directional properties and the dynamic properties of mm wave channels.
Work duties
The research work associated with this doctoral student position deals with radio channel characterization and modelling for mm wave systems using many antennas. You will participate and plan measurement campaigns, analyse the data with a focus on directional properties and dynamic behaviour. Based on the channel characteristics you will develop channel models describing the dynamic and directional behaviour of the channel. Those models will serve as guidelines and test cases when developing beamforming strategies for future wireless communication systems.
The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies, which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Selection for third-cycle studies is based on the student's potential to profit from such studies. The assessment of potential is made primarily on the basis of academic results from the first and second cycle.
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to the thesis project and the subject of study.
2. An assessment of ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems.
3. Written and oral communication skills
4. Other experience relevant to the third-cycle studies, e.g. professional experience.
Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme.
Only those admitted to third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Third cycle studies at LTH consist of full-time studies for 4 years. A doctoral studentship is a fixed-term employment of a maximum of 5 years (including 20% departmental duties). Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 .
