The Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) aims to convert its fuel from highly enriched uranium (HEU) to lower enriched uranium. This program is part of worldwide efforts to minimize the usage of HEU in research reactors. For this reason, a new nuclear fuel with an increased uranium density has to be developed. The most promising candidate is a metallic uranium-molybdenum alloy fuel (U-Mo) with aluminum-based cladding. in the working group "Hochdichte Kernbrennstoffe".

Task description

The working group "Hochdichte Kernbrennstoffe" at FRM II is actively developing manufacturing technologies for monolithic U-Mo fuels. In order to build a complete European fabrication process for such fuels, the establishment of a production capability for U-Mo foils is an essential part. This thesis will lay the foundation for this capability via the following tasks:

- Literature study of existing production processes for U-Mo foils

- Conceptual development of the required process steps: ingot casting and foil rolling

- Procurement of specialized equipment according to the French atomic regulations

- Implementation of the processes in a nuclear laboratory

- First experimental trials and metallographic examination of produced samples

Most of the abovementioned tasks will be performed at our French fuel manufacturer, Framatome-CERCA within the framework of a cooperation project between FRM II and Framatome-CERCA.


Admission to the program will include an original qualification concept featuring a set of compulsory and eligible training activities, to ensure not only academic excellence and scientific independence but also the development of fundamental personal effectiveness. This PhD position offers a stimulating scientific atmosphere with the leading experts in the field, while a horizontal network is provided by its integrated graduate school. Day-to-day work is done under optimal supervision by a small junior research group at FRM II. The salary will be typically 75% TV-L E13. During the time spent at Framatome-CERCA, the salary will be 100% TV-L E13. The work contract will have a duration of typically 36 months.


The project is a multidisciplinary task within an international collaboration project, including theoretical studies, process concept development, equipment procurement, experimental trials as well as metallographic examination of representative samples. Therefore, you hold a highly ranked MSc in Physics or Engineering, have proven experience in process development, bring technical proficiency, scientific creativity and team working skills and have fluent English knowledge (spoken and written) as well as good French knowledge (spoken and written).


The main working place will be at our French fuel manufacturer Framatome-CERCA in Romans-sur-Isre with occasional travels to the Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) at the Forschungszentrum Garching.
