Lecturer in Sociology of Law at Lund University

Lund University is offering lecturer position in social sciences. The initial contract for this position is two years. Potential candidates should apply before July 04, 2019.

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University is one of the leading education and research institutions in Sweden and operates both in Lund and Helsingborg.

Sociology of law is a social sciences discipline focusing on the relationship between law and society. The topics studied include the societal foundations and consequences of the legal system, but informal norms are also addressed. The discipline emphasises the importance of extra-legal factors for legal decisions and conflict resolution. Sociology of law was established as an independent academic subject in Sweden in 1972 with the inauguration of the first professor in the subject at Lund University. Today, the subject is based on the tension between the formal legislation of the government and the informal emergence of norms in civil society, among other contexts. The research conducted includes fields such as gender and discrimination, cyberspace, education, welfare, legal culture and legal decision-making.

The department offers courses in sociology of law at all levels of higher education, including the doctoral level. The subject is also included in the Bachelor's programme in criminology and in the autumn semester 2016 a new international Master's programme in the subject was launched. The Sociology of Law Department is keen to engage in cross-disciplinary collaboration and has good contacts with professionals and public authorities. It has been ranked highly in quality assessments and has a high proportion of external funding. Importance is attached to international contacts and a great number of the junior researchers have international links today.

The work duties of the position comprise teaching and research in sociology of law in general, at all levels. The language of instruction is Swedish and English. The qualification requirements for employment as a senior lecturer are stated in Chapter 4 Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the appointment rules for teaching staff at Lund University (https://www.staff.lu.se/sites/staff.lu.se/files/lund-university-appointment-rules-2018.pdf). The position requires a completed PhD in Sociology of Law, or equivalent documented research and teaching expertise as well as a documented ability to collaborate. The applicant is to be suitable for the position and to have the ability successfully to perform the duties associated with the position.

Appointment as a senior lecturer requires at least five weeks' training in teaching and learning in higher education or the acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other way, unless special circumstances apply. Please note that already at the very start of the employment, ability to teach in Swedish or another Scandinavian language is required. The assessment criteria for employment as a teaching staff member are startede in Chapter 4 Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. In the review of the applications, the following criteria will be taken into account. A good national and international level as a researcher; a good teaching ability, which means a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on various levels and using various teaching methods; the ability to take part in the supervision of doctoral students in their work towards a doctoral degree, the ability to engage with wider society and to inform the public about one's activities, the ability in general to lead and develop the organisation, a very good ability for collaboration.
