Postdoctoral Position in Dietary Biomarker Development

Chalmers University of Technology is offering postdoctoral researcher position in analytical chemistry. This position is available for two years. Candidates are welcome before June 16, 2019.

The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering was founded January 1 2015, and started off with high ambitions. The aim was to grow and become a leading center of innovation by combining the latest research in life sciences with biochemistry. And the department got off to flying start. In its first year, the numbers for publication, citation and external funding have been excellent.

The department consists of four divisions, each conducting outstanding research in the areas of industrial biotechnology, systems biology, chemical biology and food science. The overall goal is to help build a sustainable society and improve human health. Nearly 200 people from 20 countries are currently working at the department. The working environment is characterized by respect, cooperation, responsibility, creativity and job satisfaction. The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering has summarized its mission in four points: - To be an attractive environment for top-level researchers in biological engineering - To deliver top-level research results and innovative solutions for use in a sustainable society - To offer excellent education that develops creative engineers and scientists - To be a major contributor to international visibility of Chalmers Information about the research

The current position is available in a project based on forefront research in the field of dietary biomarkers and will focus on translating dietary biomarkers from high-end academic research into validated practical tools and methods applicable and made available for academic, private and public sector. To achieve this, novel and rapid mass- spectrometric methods for measurement of dietary biomarkers will be developed, alternative sampling techniques for assessment of dietary biomarkers will be tested, and appropriate validation of biomarkers will be undertaken using a set up of controlled dietary interventions and observational studies. The position offers a great opportunity for a highly motivated candidate with a background in analytical chemistry and with experience in quantitative method development using LC-MS/MS to conduct competitive research in a multidisciplinary research team with access to new, state- of the art instrumentation. A keen interest in nutrition is needed and some experience in nutritional metabolomics with focus on mass spectrometry and in biomarker assessment would be assets.

Major responsibilities

- Plan and conduct development of a rapid and sensitive LC-MS/MS method for measurement of multiple dietary biomarkers in one method

- Evaluate alternative sampling techniques, such as buccal cells and dried blood spots, for comprehensive biomarker assessment

- Together with other members of the project, plan and coordinate intervention studies for assessment of both dose responses and long-term reproducibility for selected biomarkers.

As a postoc, you are expected to drive your own research and communicate your results both verbally and in written.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

A successful candidate holds a PhD in analytical chemistry, nutritional biochemistry, food chemistry or in other relevant field. Documented experience in liquid chromatography mass spectrometry is mandatory. Experience in working with nutritional metabolomics, analytical method development and dietary biomarkers is meritorious.
