PhD Scholarship Position in Ground Vibrations and Structure Borne Sound

Chalmers University of Technology is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a PhD position in mechanical engineering. This position is available for five years. Applications are welcome before June 15, 2019.

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering has about 290 employees encompassing a broad theoretical knowledge base, from engineering science to the social sciences to the humanities, as well as design-based, artistic research. The combination of all of these perspectives allows for great interdisciplinary advancement in the field and a broader discussion of various aspects of sustainability. Together, we provide a comprehensive environment for architecture and civil engineering, well equipped to take on the common challenges of building a sustainable future.

Information about the division

You will join the Division of Applied Acoustics at Chalmers University of Technology as part of the project “Development of design methodology for ground-borne noise in road and railway projects” funded by the Swedish Transport Administration. You will be part of the Vibroacoustics research group that today consist of six Ph.D. students and seven seniors. The aim of the project is, within the framework of a Ph.D. education, to develop a design methodology for ground-borne noise that correspond to the one available for air-borne noise, so that the Swedish Transport Administration can design procurements for ground-borne noise in a similar way as for air-borne noise, and thus increase the possibility of obtaining more uniform and correct results. In order to develop a methodology a calculation model must also be established, why this is also included in the project. The work will be carried out in co-operation with the Swedish Transport Administration and consultancy companies in ground vibrations.

Major responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will be carrying out your research as well as supporting the teaching at the division. The research to be carried out will mainly be oriented towards the needs of the project. The main aspects are developing a validated methodology and model for structure-borne noise including methods to handle uncertainties in data and models. The project will also require experimental measurements of ground vibrations and structure-born noise in co-operation with a consultancy company. The teaching duties will be about 20 % of full working time. You will be employed at Chalmers, and you will receive a salary according to current salary agreements.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
