Krefting Research Center at the Sahlgrenska Academy, Instituteof Medicine, recruits a doctoral student in severe asthma. Our group currently consists of about 20 researchers divided between three research areas; epidemiology of asthma, biological mechanisms of inflammation and extracellular vesicles, the translational element is an important part of our research, see also http://krefting.gu.se.

Projct title: Severe asthma: prevalence, clinical aspects and impact on daily life. Translational study within the West Sweden Asthma Study.

Third-cycle studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. Project:West Sweden Asthma Study is a population based study initiated in 2008 and followed up in 2016. Currently, extensive clinical studies are ongoing. The study provides a unique opportunity to identify severe asthma in a population based cohort, knowledge that is currently limited. The current PhD project focuses on the topic of severe asthma in an epidemiological setting. Special focus will be on the prevalence, identification of preventable risk factors, health psychological aspects, quality of life and the need for support to achieve treatment goals. The study will be based on the population based West Sweden Asthma Study (WSAS), which began in 2008 and includes both postal questionnaires, in-depth clinical examinations and structured interviews. The research questions are answered using clinical cross-sectional data that party already have been collected and partly are being collected. When the data collection is completed, a qualitative interview study will be performed. The clinical examinations include comprehensive structured interviews and questionnaires on, among other things, symptoms, risk factors, compliance, health-related quality of life and detailed clinical examinations of, in particular, lung funktion parameters: spirometry, IOS, reversibility and allergy.

The chosen applicant will be fully integrated into the research team and is expected to participate in interviews and clinical examinations of the participants included in the study. You will conduct both structured interviews, clinical examinations with a focus on the airways, and conduct an interview study. As a doctoral student, you also write scientific articles and present data at scientific conferences. The work is done in close contact with other researchers and research nurses/BMA.

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

for third-cycle studiesif he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad for third-cycle studiesin Medical Science if he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. Documented experiencein clinical epidemiology, different types of lung function tests (spirometry, IOS, FeNO, provocation tests) and allergy tests, as well as experience of work according to GCP/corresponding isof merit. Experience with epidemiological clinical research in asthma and allergy is desirable. The applicant must master the Swedish language in speaking and writing as both in-depth interviews and structured interviews are conducted in Swedish.
