Blundstone PhD Scholarship at Monash University

Remuneration:The successful applicant will receive a Monash-funded Living Allowance and Tuition Fee Remission Scholarship, and Relocation Allowance (up to $1000 interstate). Living Allowance current value: $27,872 p.a. 2019 full-time rate (tax-free stipend); (annually indexed plus allowances as per RTP/MGRO stipend conditions). In addition, the successful applicant will receive an industry-sponsored top-up scholarship of $10,000 per annum ($7,000 stipend and $3,000 research and travel expenses)

Monash Health Collab within the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture at Monash University invites applications for a fully funded, 3-year PhD scholarship for commencement in Semester 2, 2019. The scholarship provides a stipend of $27,872 per annum tax exempt for three years along with a $10,000 industry-funded top up scholarship sponsored by Blundstone.

Monash Health Collab brings together a large collective of researchers and practitioners to engage in integrated, interdisciplinary and transformational research on health and well-being projects. We seek applications from local candidates with a background in Industrial Design. The successful PhD applicant will work under the supervision of Professor Mark Armstrong and Dr Rowan Page as part of a collaborative project with iconic footwear manufacturer, Blundstone, whose head office is located in Tasmania.

This project seeks to build unique and leading knowledge around foot health and footwear for people working in extreme environments. The opportunity forthe researchis to translate research findings of work practices in extreme conditions into footwear solutions that afford new levels of comfort and safety. The project is at the intersection of protection, utility and functional performance into designing fit-for-purpose products.

The investigation has a broad scope that will enable a large amount of data and insights to be integrated and aggregated into a central knowledge point that can then drive further investigations into materials, ergonomics, production, to solve challenges.

The project will underpin a wide range of new product developments at Blundstone and build market opportunities for the brand positioning in the future. The intention is to uncover and leverage unique and valuable IP as part of the process.

This scholarship opportunity is open to domestic applicants only. Applicants should have an excellent academic track record, including a Masters' degree or equivalent, and a practice track record with a background in industrial design, ergonomics and/or materials knowledge. Skills or experience in CAD modelling and data integration from fields such as podiatry or biomechanics would be highly desirable. Experience or interest in international, comparative work is ideal. Applicants will be considered provided that they meet Monash entry requirements for PhD admission, which include English-language skills. Scholarship holders must be enrolled as full-time and will share time both on campus at Monash and as a visitor to Blundstone in Tasmania.
