PhD Scholarship Position in Quality Management at Chalmers University of Technology

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in nanotechnology at Chalmers University of Technology. The initial contract for this position is five years. Applications should be sent before April 15, 2019.

The Department of Technology Management and Economics (TME) broadly researches the interaction between technology development, industrial systems, society, people and the environment. The research can be divided into three main research areas, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Supply Chain & Operations Management and Sustainability & Society Studies. The department is organized in six divisions for research and teaching and one support function and it hosts four research centres and the Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship. Our research is linked to several of Chalmers’ Areas of Advance.

Information about the project and the division

This PhD student project departs from the academic field of quality management. In particular, the focus is on improvements, process management and organisational excellence. The research work will have a collaborative and participatory approach and will be conducted in healthcare and together with healthcare professionals.

The position is placed at the Division of Service Management and Logistics (SML), which is part of the Department of Technology Management and Economics. The division pursues problem-oriented and inter-disciplinary research, with strong emphasis on organisational relevance with high visibility in leading academic journals. Our goal is to perform high quality research and education at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. We focus mainly on empirical case-based research in close interaction with industry and society.

The position will be linked toCentre for Healthcare Improvement (CHI). The Centre for Healthcare Improvement (CHI) is a research and education centre at Chalmers University of Technology carrying out research and education within improvement, innovation and transformation of health care. The research will be connected to on-going projects, and especially a project concerning the improvement of sick leave and rehabilitation processes at Vstra Gtalands Region (VGR). The project covers training of healthcare professionals, improvement of existing processes, and knowledge creation and dissemination of how process and quality improvements can be performed, and what activities and mechanisms support and hinder excellence and quality.

Major responsibilities

As a PhD student you will take part in research at the division in the area of quality management. The exact focus of the work will be decided in interaction with the main supervisor. Your major responsibility is to pursue doctoral studies in relation to a specific research aim. At large, PhD studies include a number of doctoral courses, reviewing literature, conducting research studies, and interacting with industrial companies. As a PhD student you take an active role in the research project in preparing for and collecting empirical data, conducting analysis and presenting results. During the project, results will continuously be presented at seminars and on international conferences.

The applicant is expected to conduct empirical research as primary activity, foremost applying a qualitative research approach, but open towards learning about and use mixed-methods approaches. The research project focuses mainly on empirical case-based research in close interaction with healthcare. Results of research are expected to be disseminated through interactions with professionals as well as publications in highly-ranked journals within the subject area. Large emphasis when selecting a candidate will be laid on your ability to write.

The position is a full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to five years (1+2+2). You will spend approximately 80% of this time on research. As a PhD student you will also, to a maximum of 20%, be involved in teaching bachelor and master courses and perform other departmental tasks. You will be enrolled into the postgraduate programme at the research school Technology Management and Economics. The employment is bound to successful completion of department evaluations after one and three years.


To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in e.g. industrial engineering and management, business administration, management, healthcare related professions or similar subjects, with an interest in quality improvement and quality management.

You need to be fluent in English and due to the character of the research be able to understand and speak Swedish.
