Industrial PhD Scholarship Position in Structural Intermetallic In-situ Composites for Energy Applications

Information about the project

The research at the Division of Materials Microstructure is concerned with the relationships between the structure and properties of materials. The main focus is on detailed characterization of the microstructure using advanced microscopy and micro-analytical techniques, but we are rapidly expanding in the fields of micro-mechanical testing as well as neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering and diffraction. Typically, the influence of heat treatment, production parameters and in-service conditions (high temperatures, corrosive environment, radiation, mechanical load, etc.) is studied.

Together with Kanthal We now offer an industrial PhD studentship devoted to the development of new solutions for heat resistant structural materials. You will be employed at the Materials Development department at Kanthal and is expected to be in Hallstahammar about 20 % of the time. The rest of the time will be spent at Chalmers where you will be enrolled as PhD student at the Department of Physics. You will have supervisors supporting you at both locations, providing a stimulating environment combining academic and industrial research.

The project is aimed at developing a new generation of alumina forming intermetallic in-situ composites for structural applications in demanding environments at temperatures well above 1000 C. The project will include optimization of the chemistry and structure of molybdenum silicide intermetallics aiming for mechanical properties such that state of the art FeCrAl based materials are outperformed. This will be achieved by a systematic exploration of the chemical composition and microstructure of the composite system to obtain a balance between high temperature oxidation/corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. You will use advanced materials characterisation techniques and thermodynamic modelling to reveal the underlying mechanisms.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You will also be required to complete a course program (60 higher education credits). Limited participation in teaching activities and other duties is also included, and supervision of MSc students can also be a part of the work.


To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, engineering physics or similar. You should have an interest in engineering materials, and good communication and collaborative skills. Experience of mechanical testing, materials characterization and thermodynamic modeling are all considered an advantage. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
