Experimental Biology PhD Scholarship at University of Helsinki

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in life sciences at University of Helsinki, Finland. The funds for this fellowship are available for 4 years. Candidates are welcome before April 15, 2019.

The Frkkil Lab, Research Program in Systems Oncology, is looking to hire an ambitious

EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY PhD STUDENT for an innovative tumor immunology – organoid program in ovarian cancer.

The PhD candidate we are looking for is interested in an in-depth functional analysis of the tumor microenvironment in clinical patient samples to develop of more efficient treatment modalities for ovarian cancer. The goal of PhD is to implement and develop high-throughput methods for functional analysis of patient-derived tumor organoids and tumor-immune cell co-cultures in ovarian cancer. The overall goal is to uncover the functional vulnerabilities in the tumor microenvironment of ovarian cancer, with high prospects of leading to major scientific breakthroughs and successful translation of the findings into novel clinical trials.


The successful candidate will be expected to perform experiments independently, and also collaborate and contribute to the common activities in the Frkkil Lab, and in the research program. The candidate is expected to produce written reports and documentation of analysis methods and results, and present them in internal meetings as well as in national and international conferences. The PhD student is expected to contribute to the writing and publishing of scientific papers. Schedule is full time, and the hours of this position will vary to meet deadlines in order to achieve project goals in a timely fashion. Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a Master's degree and be highly motivated to finish a PhD in approximately 4 years. The applicant should be proficient in basic laboratory methods such as tissue culture, and preferably have prior experience in fluorescent/brightfield microscopy, and interest in learning image processing & analysis. Basic knowledge and interest on cancer biology, and immunology are necessary. The candidate should have excellent written and spoken English skills. What we offer
