Research Assistant Design of Biopolymer Based Nano-senolytis for Specific Removal of Senescent Cells

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral associate position in molecular biology at University of Cambridge. The funding allows successful candidates to work for two years in the first instance. Candidates are welcome before March 06, 2019.

The BioNano Engineering group, headed by Dr. Ljiljana Fruk (, is looking for an outstanding postdoctoral Research Assistant/Research Associate for a project involving use of biopolymer based nanocarriers to develop nano-based strategies for removal of senescent cells to start on 1st of April 2019. The project is funded by CRUK Primer Award.

The aim of the project is to develop new strategies for detection and removal of senescent cells implicated in ageing, infections and cancer development and included collaboration with partner from Cancer Research UK, who have expertise in molecular biology of senescence. Work will involve design of monomers used to assemble nano-vehicles and synthesis of senolytic molecules, which can be encapsulated within these nano carriers.

The BioNano Engineering group at UCAM is composed of 6 PhD students and a number of visiting postgraduate and MPhil students of different profiles (chemists, molecular biologists, material scientists) who collaborate with experts both from Cambridge and abroad. Our interest lies in design of new strategies to prepare bio-nano hybrid materials to be used both for medical applications and for photocatalysis. We are particularly interested in developing linking systems to join bio and inorganic species and have strong track records in biofunctionalisation of nanomaterials and light-triggered chemistry. It is expected that outcomes from your research will be published in top journals, including Angewandte Chemie, and journals from Nature publishing group.

The candidate must have a strong background in organic synthesis in particular click chemistry, drug handling and modification as well as the knowledge of all required characterisation techniques. He/she should be about to obtain or hold a PhD in chemistry, or in a relevant physical science discipline. Experience in drug delivery and cell studies is not required. The candidate must be highly motivated and should have a strong academic record in terms of publications. The ability to work both as part of a team, and independently, coupled with excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills are also required. The duties / responsibilities of this post include developing and driving research objectives; writing up work for presentations, publications and grant applications; collaborating with academic and industrial partners; assisting in the supervision of PhD research projects, and delivering seminars. It is expected that the candidate will contribute substantially to the future direction of the project.
