Research Assistant 100% 3-months Employment at Lund University

The Centre for Languages and Literature at Lund University (SOL) is Sweden's largest university department for languages, linguistics, literature and area studies. SOL provides a wide range of freestanding courses complemented with an increasing number of first and second cycle degree programmes. Housing 33 subjects and roughly the same number of PhD programmes, SOL is a solid foundation for broad and deep education and research, characterised by national and international visibility. SOL is managed by a board chaired by the Head of Department. The management also includes two assistant heads of department with special areas of responsibility. More than 250 people are employed and around 3 000 students, including around 100 PhD students, conduct their studies at SOL.

Lund University announces a 3-month research assistantship in cognitive semiotics with a specialization in polysemiotic communication, 100% from 1 June to 31 August, at Centre for Languages and Literature, Lund University. Cognitive Semiotics at Lund University is a relatively new discipline, combing theories and methods from semiotics, linguistics and cognitive science, in the transdisciplinary study of meaning and sense-making. The assistantship is part of the Swedish Research Council-project POLYSEM: Polysemiotic communication: Integrating language, gesture and depiction in three cultural practices. The tasks will include (a) data collection of Paamese oral narratives in Vanuatu, and (b) transcription, translation, and annotation of linguistic data from native speakers of Paamese on the software for multimodal analysis, ELAN, in collaboration with Paamese consultants. During the first week of the position, training in the tasks will take place at SOL-centre, in parallel with preparations for the data collection. Criteria:

Applicants must have a BA degree in linguistics, good command of ELAN, conversational skills in Paamese, native-like proficiency in both French and English (spoken on Paama island as third languages), and demonstrated understanding of the ethical requirements involved in working with indigenous communities.
