Postdoc Position at Imperial College London

Imperial College London is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening postdoc position in electrochemistry. The funds for this position are available for 36 months. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before February 28, 2019.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to carry out research with Professor Titirici in the exciting area of electrode materials for Na-ion batteries.

This project is a collaboration between Imperial College, UCL and Chinese Academy of Science on converting waste, both plastic and biomass into advanced materials and chemicals. The aim of this postdoc will be to work on the hydrothermal conversion of plastic and biomass into advanced carbon materials. A fundamental understanding of the chemistry leading to the formation of carbon materials as well as of the physicochemical properties of the resulting materials is required. The carbon materials will be designed with the right properties to be applied as catalysts in heterogenous catalysis with UCL aiming at converting biomass chemicals to other valuable products. At the same time the resulting carbons will also be modified and tested as electrodes in Na-ion batteries and the relations between structure and performance will be fundamentally understood using in operando synchrotron-based characterisation techniques. Applicants should have broad interests in carbon materials synthesis, characterisation and electrochemistry. Applicants should also be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, which will be essential for collaborations in particularly with modelers, disseminating the results via journal publications and attendance at international conferences.

Applicants are expected to hold a PhD (or equivalent) in chemistry/materials science or chemical engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.

The post is available preferably of or close to 1 May 2019 for up to 36 months. The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).
