PhD Scholarship Position in Infrastructure Systems for Electric Vehicles

Outstanding international students are invited to apply for a PhD scholarship in mechanical engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. The funding allows successful candidate to work for five years. Applicants should apply before March 03, 2019.

At the department of Electrical Engineering research and education are performed in the areas of Communication and Antenna systems, Systems and Control, Computer vision, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. Our knowledge is of use everywhere where there is advanced technology with integrated electronics. We work with challenges for a sustainable future in society of today, for example in the growing demands concerning efficient systems for communications and electrifying.

We offer a dynamic and international work environment with about 200 employees from more than 20 countries, and with extensive national and international research collaborations with academia, industry and society. The transition to an electrified transport system is gaining speed and the need for charging infrastrcuture is growing fast. In this project you will develop methods to analyse the charging and electric-road infrastructure system including many vital aspects like low system cost, charging strategies for vehicles, high availability, flexibility, and low impact on the electric grid and its power balance. Based on the analysis you will compare different ways of building charging and electric-road infrastructure and develop methods to design and optimize parts of the system.

The research is done within two closely related projects, one about electrified trucks in an open pit mine with Boliden AB and another project with AB Volvo about the charging infrastructure required in a city when electric vehicles make up a high share of all road vehicles.

Major responsibilities

60 % Research in two closely related projects where you work together with a senior researcher and experts involved in the projects under guidance from a supervisor and a steering group.

20% is spent on taking PhD courses in relevant topics

20% is spent as a teaching assistant on undergraduate level in courses on Systems, Control and Mechatronics.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years.


To be succesful as a PhD you need a Master of Science in Electrical engineering, Mechanical engineering, Mechatronics or similar corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits, and have a deep understanding on complex systems function – preferably learned through hands on experience in modeling, simulation and analysis of systems. If you have experience in system design and optimization that is meritorious. You also need to be highly motivated, have a natural problem-solving ability and like to work with others. As Chalmers is a highly international working enviroment good English skills is demanded.
