Decarbonization of the energy system has a major role to play in the mitigation of climate change. However, many components of the energy system, such as wind and solar generation, are weather dependent and thus expected to change themselves in response to future changes in climate. These systems are affected by long-term changes in climate, e.g. by changes in atmospheric circulation, which may affect wind and solar resources and also their variability and likelihoods of extremes events. These impacts will probably both help and hinder mitigation and adaptation efforts, so it is vital they are well understood and incorporated into models.

In this project, you will use a mesoscale model to create time series of power-system relevant quantities both 1) forced by reanalysis in the historical period, and 2) by climate model output for future periods forced by various representative concentration pathways. The project will investigate changes in wind and solar resources and how to optimally create time series of wind and solar-relevant parameters for use in energy system studies considering impacts of future climate, also including extreme temperature, which is important for electricity demand.

You will be part of a larger project, where VRE (Variable Renewable Energy) generation and demand time series simulations are used to analyze and understand atmospheric patterns that challenge power system adequacy (ensuring sufficient facilities to meet electricity demand at all times) and system balancing and affect interconnection expansion planning.

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. Preference will be given to degrees in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, applied physics, or closely related disciplines.

The candidate should have good foundation in programming with a focus on Python and Fortran languages.Experience with the Weather, Research & Forecasting (WRF) model or other mesoscale models is a plus.

Moreover, we expect the candidate to havea strong interest in wind energy andqualitative research experience. The working language of the project is English and thus the candidate must have suitable skills in both written and spoken English.
