PhD Scholarship in Medical Radiation Physics at Stockholm University

International students are invited for a PhD scholarship at Stockholm University. The funding allows successful candidate to work for 3 years. This position is closed on March 03, 2019.

The Department of Physics is located in the AlbaNova University Center and at Karolinska Insitute and has approximately 240 employees, 250 students at undergraduate level and 90 graduate students. There are four research subjects within the postgraduate program: Physics, Theoretical Physics, Chemical Physics and Medical Radiation Physics. These subjects span over several research groups with different research activities. For information about the Department of Physics, see: www.fysik.su.se/english.

Cancer therapy using accelerated ions may deliver a more favourable dose distribution than conventional radiation therapy. Proton and heavier ions may reduce the risk of complications, but also enables dose escalation for improved tumour control. Today, the number of proton facilities in operation experience a near exponential growth, and with it the total number of patients treated. Treatment with ions heavier than protons is less abundant, but still of interest, due to their ability of sparing nearby critical organs and possibly a favourable radiobiological response.

In spite of the rapid growing number of facilities, the full potential of particle therapy is yet to be researched. This PhD project foresees to scrutinize how the linear energy transfer (LET) of the ions can be used for further optimization of the treatment modality.

The key idea for this project is based on the LET-painting concept. The hypothesis raised is that shifting high LET-components of the ion beam into the tumour may possibly lead to a therapeutic advantage. The central part of this PhD project is to investigate this hypothesis using predictive response models for both protons and heavier ions. This work will serve as an input for future radiobiological in vivo experiments and then possible design of patient studies.

This PhD-project gives room for also investigating the potential benefit of multi-ion therapy, i.e. mixing low-LET radiation (protons, photons) with high-LET radiation (carbon and oxygen ions). This part of the project will also involve development of a new radiation quality specifier which may replace LET. Within the framework, additional treatment concepts may be investigated.

Education at the research level

A PhD education at Stockholm University is four years (48 months). The 4-year PhD program includes at least 3 years of research and at most one year of course work. The position may be extended by up to one year if up to 20 % teaching assistance or administration is included in the contract. The PhD student is employed ("doktorandanstllning") during the studies, with a monthly salary starting at SEK 26 500. Qualification requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

To be accepted as a PhD student in Medical Radiation Physics,a second-cycledegree project corresponding to 30 credits within the subject or, alternatively, a second-cycle degree project in another subject in combination with 60 credits of physics courses, is required.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection

The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The successful applicant will be selected based on documented theoretical and experimental knowledge relevant for the area of study, knowledge of scientific theory and method, analytical skills, personal motivation and team working skills. Well-developed English language skills are required. The applicants are encouraged to provide supporting documents that substantiate qualifications, e.g., knowledge, skills, abilities and experience. References and interviews will be used to assess qualifications of the applicants. We seek a self-motivated candidate with good analytical abilities and skilled in English.

The proposed PhD project is mostly of computational nature, however some experimental work at local facilities and abroad may happen. The ideal candidate should bring strong coding skills in Python in Linux environments and be familiar with git. The project will be based on the open source PyTRiP framework, which will be extended during this project (see github.com/pytrip/pytrip). Monte Carlo particle transport codes such as FLUKA, Geant4 and SHIELD-HIT12A will also be used during this project. Knowledge in medical radiation physics is certainly an advantage, but not a prerequisite.

Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University are available at:www.su.se/rules and regulations.

Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.

Please note that admission decisions cannot be appealed.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
