Doctoral Student in Conservation: Heritage in Economic Growth and Social Renewal

As a Doctoral Student, you will be based at the Department of Conservation and be part of the International Training Network HERILAND. HERILAND is a European network that trains 15 young researchers in the dynamic field of spatial heritage. It is a consortium of 7 key academic and non-academic organizations, with 21 partners in civil society and business, from the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Poland, Israel and Italy.

The HERILAND project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 813883. A third cycle education at our department will lead toa degree of doctor of philosophy in Conservation.

The project aims to empower a new generation of academics, policy makers, practitioners, professionals and entrepreneurs.

As one of these 15 young researchers, you will be provided with advanced training, combining theoretical and instrumental knowledge in a series of research seminars, living labs and secondments with our public and private partners. By doing this, you will profit from and contribute to a new pan-European, trans-national, interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research and training standard.

The Department of Conservation offers professional degree programs and research on issues of cultural heritage, landscapes, cultural environments, buildings, gardens, cultural historical objects, and interiors. We offer degree programs for building preservationists, conservators, and leaders in the fields of sloyd and traditional handicrafts, building construction, garden, and landscaping crafts.Conservation demands expertise in a broad range of knowledge that includes fields in the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. Collaboration is an important component of what we docollaboration among the different branches of the department, between degree programs and research, and with the surrounding society nationally and internationally.

As a Doctoral student you will work in the work package The Spatial Turn (see project design) in the project "Heritage in Economic Growth and Social Renewal" focused on the economic and social potential of place branding. The empirical part shall include case studies of ongoing local and regional place marketing/branding and heritage management processes.

Eligible are those who hold a second cycle university degree in Conservation or a field that the university consider to be related to the discipline of Conservation. It is required that the applicant master English in speech and writing at an acceptable level for the planned education. The language of instruction is mainly English.

In order to be approved for Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN financing the applicant, at the time for the application, should not have resided in Sweden more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. More over the applicant must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Researchers can be nationals of any country.

During their research, the candidates must accept to be seconded in partner organisations as scheduled in their research description.

Selection among applicants who meet the requirements for basic and special eligibility is based on the applicant’s ability to benefit from research studies.

Extent: 100 % Location: Department of Conservation, Gothenburg First day of employment: 2019-10-01 Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1998:80. Only those who are admitted to third-cycle studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships.

The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. The total employment period may not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle studies for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
