The Department of Geosciences and Geography at the Faculty of Science is the leading research and education unit in its field in Finland. In addition to research in geology, geophysics and geography, research into seismology and official duties in the field of seismology is carried out at the department. The staff at the department numbers some 100.

The Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is seeking

A UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN GEOGRAPHY from the 1 August, 2019. The more specific fields of the post of University Lecturer are human geography and urban geography. The research and teaching of human and urban geography are at the core of the field of geography at the University of Helsinki, and are also connected with the primary focus areas of the University of Helsinki as a part of the research carried out within URBARIA – the Institute of Urban and Regional Studies.

The duties of the university lecturer will include developing and updating the study module for human and urban geography at Helsinki in cooperation with the professors in the field. The university lecturer will give instruction within the bachelor and master programmes in geography, participate in the planning and organisation of method and field courses, supervise bachelor and master theses, actively publish in especially international publication series, and participate in application for external funding, as well as the development of the work of research groups at the department, especially by promoting the use of large register and statistics collections. The university lecturer is expected to be active in research, social interaction, and networking. The university lecturer will also carry out other duties assigned by the department or study programmes in geography.

In accordance with the regulations of the University of Helsinki, candidates are expected to have a doctoral degree in the discipline and the ability to give high-quality instruction based on research, and to supervise theses. When assessing candidates, their scientific publications and other research results with scientific merit will be considered. Further, the teaching experience and pedagogic education of candidates, skills in producing teaching material, other merits within teaching, and a teaching demonstration if necessary will be considered. Other merits include a wide knowledge of research methods, the ability to develop methods, and experience with instruction in quantitative methods.

According to the university legislation, the university lecturer is expected to be proficient in Finnish. In addition, the university lecturer must have sufficient oral and written skills in Swedish. Foreigners or Finnish nationals who were not born here or have not received their education in Finnish or Swedish may be recused from this language regulation without separate application. The supervision of theses in Finnish requires sufficient knowledge of the language. The salary is based on the demands chart of the university salary system for teaching and research staff, and amounts to 4,000-5,000 euros per month.
